SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

Detailed information about the project

What is photocatalysis?

It is the acceleration of a photoreaction in the presence of a catalyst, which, without being consumed, reduces the activation energy of the reaction by offering an alternative mechanism for its realization. Photocatalysis has been widely used to address many environmental challenges posed to modern society. The scientific community highlights, daily, the antimicrobial potential of photocatalysis.

The combination of photocatalysis with anaerobic digestion is expected to yield a number of environmental benefits, enhance the circular economy of biogas plants and save resources available for current sanitation processes.

The objectives of the project

Physicochemical and microbiological evaluation of the substrates / feeds and the corresponding digestate composition using new molecular approaches

Investigation of the integration of an optimal liquid-solid separation system for the mechanical separation of digestate.

Design of new photocatalytic materials to optimize photocatalytic sanitation

Development of photocatalytic membranes using the materials developed

Design and development of a sanitation reactor using the photocatalytic ultrafiltration membranes in combination with the liquid and solid fraction separation system

Pilot development of the technology and integration in the anaerobic digestion units

The project is managed and coordinated by Qlab analytical laboratory.
